  • Look For Raine

Writing this in the comfort of my house, sipping green tea, all while listening to my latest record of Bruce (a Christmas gift from a friend may I say). I've been down with fever the past two days, and I woke up this morning because of the noise from my upstairs neighbours, I got barely 3 hours of sleep. I'm feeling better now, though.

Here we go again. 2019, what can I say.

"You are an angel in the shape of my mom.."

She was, and will always be. The Angelita to my Angelique.

I always feel so proud and loved whenever I tell the story behind my second name. She was one of the kindest, and endearing person I have ever known. It has been two decades since she was taken away from us, but my heart still aches for her. I can think of a hundred could-have-beens should she still be around. And I can't help but shed a tear whenever I think of her. Nonetheless, deep in my folly, I know that I should be happy because she is already home. Sometimes my prayer was for her to visit me in my dreams. I miss her angelic face, that's all.

gusto ko nang umuwi, yung wala nang balikan

An overwhelming feeling of wanting to die had enveloped me that night, right after I finished my first stick of the week. My colleague was asking something about work, I knew the answer, but I didn't know how to respond. I was out of focus. The surroundings started to get blurry, the people around me were all glued to their phones, but it seems like they have no faces. Somehow, I slept well that night.

I took this photo while I was on my way home, teary eyed due to exhaustion.

It’s a bit scary how I got used to working on weekends that whenever I have a free one, I don’t have anything else to do. I must be doomed.

It has been a hell lot of work load these past three/four months - working almost 15 hours at the office on weekdays, and spending weekends just about the same. I complain a lot, yes, but I must have liked it in a way that I just kept on doing it. In all honesty, I didn’t know what my motivation was. It wasn’t even the pay check. Maybe it was boredom. Maybe it was my monotonous routine. Maybe it was lifelessness. My life was a blah, and I somehow needed it. Yes, I have given it a thought real good. The thing is, the advantage of working on end is that it keeps me away from all the overthinking. It was some sort of an escape. But definitely, an unhealthy escape. I won’t say I managed the stress, because God knows I did not.

It’s a shame how whenever someone asks me what I usually do on weekends, I answers ‘work’. Yuck. What a bore.

But it all panned out just the same, with or without that shit of workload. Lighting a cigarette to alleviate stress saying ‘just one stick’, but then you found yourself smoking another; finishing a bottle of beer while Netflix is playing in the background because you only like the noise it makes; reading a book, but not understanding anything from it so you re-read that same paragraph for the eight time; watching people glued to their mobiles, wondering if that actually makes them a normal being; wanting to get a random tattoo or a piercing but not being able to bring yourself to really doing it; and doing just about anything that could keep you away from sinking into your self-destruction. It was like being trapped in a quicksand, you keep on pulling away but you are still stuck and gripped.

It was tough, it has always been tough. And still, I pick myself up. I know what to do, I have always knew.

So hey self, don’t love your chains.

I was at home, on a Sunday, with nothing else to do.

It was 29th May, 2018 when my best friend for almost whole of my life finally got engaged. I just landed in Singapore that time from Boracay. When I turned off my phone's airplane mode, the first message I got was from her—a wave in Facebook messenger. You see, we're the type of friends who do not talk to each other every day. (Maybe I'm the type of that person, tamad ako mag-chat.) And that's it. She sent me a photo of her hand with the engagement ring, saying "Happy to share this with you!" I wanted to fly back to the Philippines and hug her. I was so happy, and ecstatic. Finally. And I asked her to tell me ALL the details.

Whenever I have a major trip, I almost always have one song that I would listen on repeat during the entirety of the travel. And for Japan, it was Bruce Springteen's "I'm on Fire" and Dire Strait's "Walk of Life". I know "I'm on Fire" has some negative connotation when you listen to the lyrics, but I felt like dancing to it with the sub-zero winter temperature of Hokkaido.

Wala lang, I just felt like mentioning it.

Anyway, I finally finished our Hokkaido travel video after almost two months of editing. Lol

Hokkaido was a dream, especially for us two Asian girls who experienced real snow for the first time.

This trip was one year in the making. It was 31st of January 2018 when one of my good friends sent me a message saying, "Bessy, kapag game ka ng Japan sa January 2019, game ako." And my instant impulsive answer was, "Sige. G."  I have a lot of friends who are all high praises when talking about Japan, and that made me curious.  I have been wanting to go, but I thought my first time in Japan should not be a solo trip. Thank God for my naturally adventurous friends.

Two weeks into the new year, and here I am, trying to remember whatever 2018 has thrown at me. I just came back from a week long vacation, a well-spent one I must say. And so I have always been late to what people would call "reflective-year-end-posts".
