  • Look For Raine

I'm slowly starting to fall in love with the East part of Singapore. It's a fact that Geylang has a reputation of being Singapore's red light district. I remember years ago when I first set foot in this area, there were indeed scattered brothels with girls seated outside waiting for customers. I was a bit culture shock as it was surprisingly very different from the clean and busy city centre of Singapore.

Some time back, in my quest to find the same photographic memory I had, we walked along Geylang Road, Lorong 8 to 24. Unfortunately, what we found are only terraced houses with large numbers written on the gates, some with hanging red lanterns, with their banner signs indicating CLOSED. The pandemic must have put their businesses into a halt, just like many other businesses. Too bad, I was not able to take photos of these as I am hesitant taking photos of these private properties.

Whilst on the other side of Geylang, in between Aljunied and Paya Lebar MRT, what awes me the most is the plethora of food choices around the area. Most of which are local cuisines like dim sum stalls, malay and chinese hawker centres, coffee shops, etc. Special mention to the rows of fruit stalls that sells their King of Fruits —Durian. I was surprised when I see people dining in at these stalls just to eat durian. I didn't know people actually do that here in Singapore.

Sometimes I do miss the quiet and calm neighborhood of Telok Blangah - especially the sight of trees and greeneries. But almost 4 months since we moved in and I have no regrets choosing this neighborhood. I feel like I am in Manila with the lively streets of Geylang, the densely situated stores and food centers, the shop houses.

And of course, the back alleys that seem to have a life of its own. I'm not exactly sure why I seem drawn to them. Unhygienic or disgusting it may look, but the way they look actually gives a story and a contrast to the bustling city of Singapore. They look like remnants of a forgotten past. They have texture and colors entirely unique to them.

skating into the sunset

I like to make myself busy, the stay-sane-at-home has made me hop into a lot of pre-occupations. So here are a few things/activities that would probably qualify me as a gold member of the "Busy Bee Society".

  • Macramé Crafts

It was a short visit to Spotlight that got me into macramé. I was there to buy a cross-stitch kit because I wanted to re-visit my childhood hobby. (I learnt cross-stitch when I was in elementary and Hello Kitty was my first finished cross-stitch art then.) Anyway, I saw this DIY mini plant-hangers macrame kit that was on sale. It looks very interesting so I grabbed one, and there goes my first purchase of macrame kit. The kit included a pamphlet of instructions. When I started making them, it was like a big revelation to me, like a kid who discovered her new favorite candy. I wanted to make more! And thus begin, a new hobby for me.

Carpe diem!

Frankly speaking, we initially LOLed at the idea of a cruise to nowhere when it was first launched late last year. Why would I want to pay for a cruise going nowhere? Would it be safe? Would I really enjoy going around wearing mask all day? But my travel-starved-just-turned-thirty-self could not pass on the idea of fulfilling a birthday trip, even if it's only going nowhere.

Sans the pandemic, I would not consider paying a hefty amount for a cruise. "Cruising is just for the rich, luxurious people." But I guess, COVID has indeed entirely change everything. So here I am now, hours after we disembarked, writing about our cruise experience.

Beautiful sunset view during our last day!

For years, I have been a fan of The Script. Partly because I have a big crush on Danny O'Donoghue (what's with musicians, really), but of course, mainly because of their music, which, like Coldplay, really speaks from the heart. Who doesn't get emo with Breakeven, and pushed back from moving on because of the The Man Who Can't Be Moved. I personally have an emotional attachment with If You Could See Me Now, as it reminds me of a special loved one. Their latest album, I noticed, is more about the current world we're living in, how we have to be united, and be there for each other.

I'm not entirely sure how to properly start this blog post. Because up until now, I am still in a concert high, and my heart is still overflowing with joy. Two days ago, I watched Ed Sheeran's Divide Tour at Singapore Indoor Stadium.

"There is beauty and art in madness."

But perhaps for an artist like Yayoi Kusama, art and madness are never an identical activity.

That is my takeaway after that weekend visit at the National Gallery of Singapore. I am so enthralled to be able to witness a 7-decade worth of over 120 amazing works across media by one of the world's most influential artists. If you don't know who I am talking about, then here are some fast facts about Yayoi Kusama, who is considered as the Queen of Polka Dots:

What do you do when you want to go out of town but don't have the means (or probably just being frugal), and certain circumstances (like fully booked hotels, overpriced bus/ferry/air fare tickets) won't allow you to?

As for me, I go to a place that could somehow take me away from the bustle of the city. Coney Island or Serangoon Island, I believe, has that kind of ambience. Thanks to the friends who introduced this place to me.

Just when I thought I was running out of new things to try/do in Singapore, an opportunity presented itself—biking.

I have been reading about Pulau Ubin long before, that is one of the few kampongs left in Singapore; that it is an offshore island located in the northeast of Singapore; that it is popular for outdoor activities and summer camps. But apparently, I never got a chance to visit Pulau Ubin until just recently. Because first, I am not very confident in my biking skills and secondly, I don't think my friends are interested. (I know, I'm probably just making excuses. He-he)

Whenever I meet new friends in Singapore, I would always ask them: "Aren't you already bored here?" Most of the answers I get - surprise - is a "Yes". And then we would talk how touristy and how small Singapore is, how you could get used to the usual tourist spots, how you could go around the whole Singapore in just one day. If the conversation turns to be a good one, my next question would be: "Then what do you usually do on weekends?"

After years of succumbing into the trauma of watching a movie alone, I finally mustered up the courage to do it again.

(I had a very bad experience of going solo into the cinema and I don't want to rake the ashes telling you the indecent details about it. Time to leave it behind now.)

Not known to many, it is a secret dream of mine to be in the Arts and Communication industry. Maybe it is an irony of life that you only get to realize what you actually want when it is already a little too late. I'm not sure why I did't pursue it back in college, I just found myself enrolled under BSIT. Anyway, no regrets here and I don't want to go down memory lane.

So to nourish that little dream of mine, I always fancy going to different kinds of museum. During my first week in SG, I explored the National Museum alone and then I visited Melacca, Malaysia where I literally did museum-hopping. (You can find more of my kwentos here! :) And it was only, a little less than fortnight ago, I finally got to see Singapore's Red Dot Design Museum.

Red Dot Design Museum is the first contemporary design museum in Singapore and in Asia which opened last November 2005. The museum presents the latest trends in the international design scene. All the award winning works displayed here were tested, discussed and evaluated by a panel of international experts - the Red Dot Design Award.

I wish my photos took some justice with it. Because I was definitely amazed by the work of expert minds displayed inside the museum.

Nikau Pendant Luminaire - made of FSC-certified bamboo plywood and sold as a kit of single parts.
Jury Statement: It showcases a natural appearance with distinctive lines that produce a charming effects of light and shade.

NI - a LED parasol that can be illuminated when open as well as closed.
Jury Statement : The multifunctional NI LED Parasol has an appealing design with regards to form as well as function.

SLADDA Bicycle - The design of SLADDA is easily accessible and uncomplicated, supported by a frame that fits all riders.
Jury Statement : With SLADDA, the bicycle is given a new identity as a genuine part of a sustainable lifestyle.

My First Dream House Play Tent

With the advancement of technology, addiction to electronic devices increases. Both children and adults are depicted as prisoners of the three Cs - computer, communication and consumer electronics. And although they are actually close to each other, each of them lives in his or her own electronic world. It also means, "I am addicted to my iPhone."

Never before in human history has there been more food produced that today. However, at the same time, more than 10% of people are suffering from starvation and 1billion people have weight problems. This poster deals with the very theme of war for food.

This work of art deals with the fact that oil spill pollution causes seabirds' feathers to be covered with oil and damages them or even leads to death.

The End of Line deals with the issues of overfishing as it affects marine ecosystems worldwide and has led to collapsing fish stocks. To illustrate the impact of this ecological disaster on the Earth's ocean, the world map is presented in the form of a fishing net to convey the idea that overfishing is closely related to the depletion of the global ecosystem.

The Girl Who Worries Too Much - This project illustrates the experiences of the illustrator when she was treated with depression. The complex world of emotions is expressed as the growing hair of the character. Following this approach of projecting emotions from the person experiencing them onto an illustrational levei has helped to create an outlet of highly sophisticated expression.

Earth - This poster draws attention to the far-reaching effects of global warming. It shows the future of the Earth when the polar ice caps have completely melted. When beholders look at it, they cannot help but touch the paper to confirm their impression and find out wether this is an actual texture or just an optical illusion.
